CDC Recommends Vaccination Against Mpox
Protect Yourself from Mpox with CDC-Recommended Vaccines
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued recommendations for vaccination against mpox, formerly known as monkeypox.
Who Should Get Vaccinated?
- Individuals who have had known or suspected exposure to someone with mpox
- Individuals who have had a sex partner in the past 2 weeks who was diagnosed with mpox
Types of Vaccines Available
Two vaccines may be used to prevent mpox:
- JYNNEOS vaccine, licensed to prevent smallpox and mpox
- ACAM2000 vaccine, licensed to prevent smallpox only
Mass Vaccination Not Recommended
Mass vaccination is not required nor recommended for monkeypox at this time.
Pre-exposure Vaccination
Primary preventive pre-exposure vaccination (PPV) is recommended for individuals at high risk of exposure to mpox, such as laboratory workers and healthcare providers who handle mpox specimens.
Importance of Vaccination
Vaccination is an important tool in preventing the spread of mpox. The vaccine may still protect against severe illness, hospitalization, and death.
