The European Union Parliament has taken a monumental step towards decarbonizing the transportation sector by voting overwhelmingly to phase out the sale of new combustion engine vehicles by 2035. This landmark decision signals a clear commitment to the transition to zero-emission electric vehicles and represents a significant milestone in the fight against climate change.
Effective from 2035, the EU will no longer allow the registration of new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles that produce CO2 emissions, effectively marking the end of new diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles in the region. This move is part of the EU's ambitious Green Deal, which aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
The decision is accompanied by an exemption for vehicles powered by synthetic fuels (e-fuels), which are produced using renewable energy sources.
